MENTAL HEALTH FOR IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEESImmigrants and refugees are often confronted with significant barriers to accessing mental health services.
Studies show these barriers comprise a lack of awareness about mental health, the stigma associated with mental illness in their home countries, and the financial strain associated with accessing mental health services.
Did you know that Utah is home to roughly 200,000 foreign-born immigrants who face similar challenges in accessing mental health services?
Although Utah has a long-standing commitment to immigrants and refugees, there are limited mental health awareness initiatives tailored to black immigrants in Utah.
At GK Folks Foundation we believe it’s possible to increase awareness about mental health while breaking the stigma associated with mental health in Utah immigrant and refugee communities.

LET’S END THE STIGMA PROJECT
Project Overview
What is the purpose of this project? The purpose of the project is to increase mental health awareness in the Black immigrant community. In the cultures many of us come from, we don’t often talk about mental health. Yet we are no different when it comes to the prevalence of mental health conditions. Here at the GK folks Mental Health Program, we would like to do something about it. Alright, what will the project entail?
This project will consist of a series of five-online workshops facilitated by licensed mental health professionals. Each workshop will focus on different topics on mental health. We will talk about what mental health is and why it’s important to seek mental wellness. You will also hear personal stories of Black immigrants and their mental health journeys Cool, what are the benefits of attending these workshops?
You will learn more about mental health, learn skills to keep your mental health in check, and learn about the many local mental health resources available to you. Additionally, participants who complete all the workshops will be awarded a $25 gift card and have a chance to be entered into a drawing to receive a grand prize of a $200 gift card. You had me at the grand prize, what are the dates again?
Thursdays @ 6.30 pm via zoom beginning October 22 to November 19, 2020 What if I have any questions?
